Before measuring your windows for blinds or shades, it's important to first determine the right mounting option for your space. Both inside and outside mounts offer unique advantages and are suited to different needs, so choosing the appropriate style will ensure the best fit and functionality.
Measure the depth at the top of the inside window casing to ensure there is sufficient space for a secure inside mount. This measurement is also crucial for determining whether a flush mount—where the window treatment fits entirely within the frame without protruding—is feasible. The required minimum depth varies by shade type, so please refer to the depth requirements listed below for each style, which are essential for achieving a proper inside mount.
For shades: Given potential variations in window shapes, it's advisable to take measurements at three points: the top, middle, and bottom. Round each measurement down to the nearest 1/8 inch for accuracy.
When determining the length, measure the window in three locations: along the left, center, and right sides. Round each measurement up to the nearest 1/8 inch, and use the largest measurement as your ordering length.
To ensure the shade fits correctly, take the smallest of these measurements and account for any required deductions to obtain the final width measurement.
Measure the space above the window to ensure it’s sufficient for secure installation of the brackets and headrail.
Measure the width of the window from outer edge to edge. If possible, add 2-4 inches (1-2 inches per side) to minimize light seepage. This adjusted measurement will be your ordering width, representing the total width of the shade.
Measure the height of the window from outer edge to edge. If possible, mount the shade 10-12 inches above the frame to allow for its stack height when rolled up and to maximize window exposure.
Tips for Outside Mount
Allow Extra Space: When measuring for outside mount shades, account for the headrail and mounting brackets. To achieve optimal light control and privacy, add sufficient width to fully cover the window trim. If there’s no trim, add at least 2 inches on each side, totaling 4 extra inches.
Enhance Visual Appeal: Extending shades beyond the window frame not only accommodates the mounts but also creates the illusion of a larger window, adding an elegant and expansive feel to your space.
Ensure Adequate Mounting Surface: Outside mounts require a flat surface at least 2 inches above the window or frame to securely hold the brackets. Verify that you have enough space before starting the installation.
Use Projection Brackets if Needed: For windows with protruding frame molding, projection brackets can extend the shades outward, ensuring they clear the molding and operate smoothly.
